Did you know that you can get paid for playing video games? In fact you can make a pretty decent income by helping gaming companies find bugs, and improve their unreleased games. Before I go into all the details I want to tell you my story and how I became a video game tester.
So here is how I started getting paid well for playing games…
I am a gamer, and as all gamers I love playing video games. Back in college I used to play with my buddies on the campus computer network. It was fun and sometimes we even skipped classes just to play our games. Maybe I should’nt have even mentioned this, but that’s the honest truth.
One of my friends was a game tester and he had a bunch of unreleased games that I used to borrow from him. One day I got a copy of a strategy game that was supposed to be a big hit for the company. I played for a while and found many different bugs that were very annoying. For example, one of the units that was being produced in the base was undestructable. I am not sure how the programmers could have missed that, but I guess that’s why they need game testers before they release those games to public.
I told my friend about it and actually wrote down exactly what was happening while playing the game. He included it in his report and then asked me if I ever thought of becoming a video game tester. I really didn’t have the time for that at the time, because I already had a job in a local restaurant. I asked him to give me some more information and how well would I get paid.
He then gave me some information and how I could get started. I actually didn’t do anything with it for over 2 months. Then Spring Break time came along so I finally got around to it.
I did some research and found that there is a huge demand for video game testers. I found a few companies that were hiring at the time and I got my first game testing job. I thought I would go ahead and give it a try. The company would pay for each game I tested. The games arrived in the mail the first week and I started playing them as much as I could. I wrote down my reports and submitted it back to the company.
When the next set of games arrived I also received my first paycheck. It was amazing! I’ve actually made a copy of it to frame it, and hang it in my gaming room.
The funny thing was that the check was almost 3 times bigger than what I was making in the restaurant as a server.
